For one, Elizabeth I was Anglican, following in the footsteps of her father, Henry VIII, who broke off the Church of England from the Vatican. For another, there was a backlash against Catholicism because of the rather violent reign of Elizabeth's sister, the Catholic Mary I (aka "Bloody Mary"). There were also plenty of people in England who benefited from the schism created by Henry VIII, so it was in their best interests to keep England Protestant.
King Philip II of Spain was a catholic, as was all Spain; Queen Elizabeth I was a protestant, as was most of England and to Philips' eyes they were heretics. Philip had the blessing of the pope for the invasion of England to spread catholicism.
The religion in England that persecuted other religions was Protestantism, specifically the Church of England. Under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Catholicism and other dissenting religious groups were actively persecuted. This period is known as the Elizabethan Religious Settlement.
England and Spain had been heading toward war for years. Trading rivalry and religious differences were the two major reasons for conflict between England and Spain.
King Philip II of Spain launched the Armada in 1588 primarily for four reasons: to overthrow Protestant Queen Elizabeth I of England, who had supported Protestant rebels in the Spanish Netherlands; to end English interference in Spanish trade and piracy against Spanish ships; to re-establish Catholicism in England; and to restore Spanish dominance over European politics and maritime power. The Armada aimed to secure a Catholic stronghold in England and eliminate a key rival in the ongoing religious and political conflicts of the time.

The King of Spain, Philip II, was a Catholic and began the naval war against England in 1588. He sent a huge war fleet to England for several reasons: A. To safeguard Spanish merchant ships and Spain's colonies against English raids; B. To depose the Protestant queen of England, Elizabeth I; and C. To restore Catholicism to England. The Spanish Armada met a huge storm that destroyed much of the King's fleet, and the English war ships ended the entire affair.
Mostly, Spain's effort to invade England, depose the reigning Queen Elisabeth I, re-institute Catholicism as England's State religion and remain the power behind the throne with a Catholic puppet Monarch put there by them. The - failed - Armada expedition, you guessed it.
In the late 1560s a rebellion broke out in the Netherlands, and the rebels were Protestant. Elizabeth helped these Protestants. By helping Spain's enemies, Queen Elizabeth encouraged Protestant ideas and was willing to help the enemies of Catholic Spain, which made Spain England's enemies.
Elizabeth 1st reign is remembered for many reasons but two of the more important were: 1. The execuion of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1587. 2.The Spanish Armanda of 1588 3. strengthening England
Because Philip of Spain was a Catholic and Elizabeth I was a protestant. Their religious views differed so much that they fought over everything. The Spanish Armada attempted the invasion of England in order to overthrow Elizabeth I and establish Philip and his daughter, the infanta Isabella as the rulers of England. The armada was repelled and sunk by the English navy led by Sir Francis Drake.
