Singer Javier Olivares dead at age 57

The voice of many popular hits by Houston-based cumbia band Fito Olivares y La Pura Sabrosura has been silenced.
Singer Javier Olivares died Sunday night in a Pasadena area hospital after surgery to treat stomach cancer. The Mexico-born singer had been hospitalized for two months, said the band's longtime manager Mike Aguilar of Los Aguilares.
Recognized by Billboard magazine for its enormous impact on the Latin music world, the band's vocalist and sometime drummer Olivares was the voice of best-selling songs "La Gallina," the humorous "El Colesterol," "Winnona" and the signature classic, "Juana La Cubana."
Saxophonist Fito Olivares, who is semi-retired and beloved as the tubby "El Rey de la Cumbia, said that the group intends to meet its booking schedule. They are set to perform at Graham Central Station on June 22.
La Pura Sabrosura was formed in the late '70s and enjoyed its greatest successes in the late 1980s.
