Julue Andrews and the children sang "Do Re Mi" in The Sound of Music. You can hear the song and get the lyrics at http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/lyrics/doremi.htm
Julie Andrews did not sing. i am not sure who did because she did not get any credit for her singing. Julie Andrews did indeed sing the songs in Sound of Music. The only songs I know of that had voice overs were Climb Every Mountain and some of the songs the children sang...though it wasn't a total voice over with the children's songs...they just had additional singers add voice to the songs.

It it sung because the children run into Maria's room during a thunder storm and are frightened. She tells them that when she is frightened, she thinks of her favourite things like.... (song starts)
The answer is Julie Andrews. She is also in the sound of music she plays Maria. She has written many songs and she sadly cannot sing anymore so she cannot do singing in plays anymore

They didn't want to take a chance by using Julie Andrews. Although Julie had perfected the character of Eliza Doolittle on stage on Broadway and in London in My Fair Lady and was a star on Broadway, she was virtually unknown in the movie world. They wanted a big name to play Eliza Doolittle in the movie version of My Fair Lady and that's why they chose Audrey Hepburn instead. I'm not sure why they didn't choose another star who could actually sing. In hindsight, I'm sure they realized that Julie Andrews would've been the better choice.
I can't say that I know Julie Andrews' favorite kind of music, but in a few interviews she has said that one of her favorite songs is "My Ship" with music by Kurt Weill and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and has recorded it multiple times. She has also listed "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music (Rodgers and Hammerstein) as a favorite song. Hope that helps a little.
