Why aren't you supposed to say the 'Shema Yisrael' lying down?

The School of Shammai states that the Shema should be recited lying down as the passage indicates. The School of Hillel states that one may say it in whatever position is comfortable. Shammai has a stricter approach on all halachic issues and is therefore followed less so. Consequently, Hillel's view regarding this issue and others is followed though many commentators note that Shammai's position(s) will be followed during the Messanic Age because stricter observance will be easier.

What was Jesus unwashed hands parable?

Christ was railing against the Pharisees of the house of Shammai. In their attempt to "build a fence around the Torah" they had added a multitude of traditions. Shammai and his followers taught that if one did not wash their hands in precisely the manner they prescribed, food that was "clean" would be "unclean" if eaten with what they considered to be "unwashed" hands. There is a Christian tradition of Christ being strongly opposed to the Pharisees and that they were somehow evil. In reality, his teachings closely followed those of the more liberal house of Hillel and on a number of occasions he quoted Hillel precisely (some of those passages where he appears to paraphrase passages from the Old Testament). Only once did the teachings of Christ depart from those of Hillel, and that was in regards to divorce.

How great is the mitzvah of loving your fellow as yourself?

To illustrate the importance, the Gemara (Shabbat, 31a) relates the following story: A non-Jew came in front of Shammai and requested conversion on condition that Shammai teach him the whole entire Torah while standing on one foot. Shammai then drove him away with a builder's rod. The non-Jew then decided to ask Hillel to convert him on the same condition (that he teach him the whole entire Torah while standing on one foot). Hillel responded the following: "Do not do to your friend what is hateful to you...the rest is commentary, go learn!" We therefore see that according to Hillel, loving your fellow as yourself is so important that in essence it is the entire Torah! Furthermore, Rashi (Shemos, 19;2) relates that when the Torah was given, the whole entire nation were like "one man with one heart." Meaning, there were no differences between them. They were all like one--in peace. The Yalkut Shimoni (Yitro, 273) relates that Hashem said, "The whole Torah is peace and to whom do I give it? To the nation which loves peace!" We therefore see the true greatness of pursuing peace--for without peace, the Jews would have never received the Torah!

What is typical of first century judaism?

The Torah-learning was at a level of extremely high activity. Sages such as Hillel, Shammai, Rabban Yochanan and hundreds of others, each had hundreds and sometimes thousands of disciples. Rabbi Akiva began his career during this century and had 24 thousand pupils before the close of the century. Rabban Yochanan had so many disciples that they had to learn outdoors since no building was big enough. There were some antagonistic groups, but they were minorities and had no influence on the vast majority, who sympathized with the Torah sages.
