Thomas Selfridge became the 1st airplane-related fatality on September 17, 1908. A lieutenant in the US Army Signal Corps, Selfridge was part of a group that evaluated the Wright plane at Fort Myer, Virginia. Up 75 feet in the air with Orville Wright, Selfridge was killed when the plane went out of control after its propeller broke after hitting a bracing wire. Orville Wright was seriously injured in the crash.
