Abbie was an organizer of protests during the civil rights and anti-Vietnam protests of the 1950's and 60's in America. We was a self-proclaimed revolutionary and was a high-profile character in a number of major protest events. He called his group the Yippies! in an attempt to mock the label the media gave to the protesters of that time.

He is perhaps best well known for his involvement in the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Committee protest, in which a so-called 'police riot' erupted in national TV and the famous chant of "the whole world is watching" was first used. Abbie was later arrested, along with seven other defendants (including Bobby Seal and Jerry Reuban (sp?)) and charged with the crime of crossing state lines with the intent to cause a riot. After Seal (sp?) decided to defend himself, the seven remaining defendants became known as "The Chicago Seven"

He also participated in protests at the national mall in Washington D.C. (where crowds rushed the barricades at the Pentagon) and on Wall Street/Central Station in new york.

Later in life he successfully sued the Central Intelligence Agency for their mishandling of a protest he and his son participated in.
