A character, a teen-aged boy (unlike the much younger Timmie of the Provost-Lockhart Lassie familiar to many) called Jeff Morrow. Actor involved was one Tommy Rettig, no longer with us. The few Whitman ( a publisher) novels based on Lassie were tied into this scenario, not the Timmie character. He hailed from a one-parent family,
It"s like a bad taste you can"t get out of your memory or mouth! I hate Lassie as I got older.- Okay there were three different Lassie-masters or handlers ( in the show). Stage one was Jeff Morrow who was an early teen-aged boy played by the now deceased actor Tommy Rettig. Stage 2, the best known, was Timmy Martin ( almost never was the last name used) a child-much younger than master one, of the Martin family of Paul and Ruth. Ruth Martin, the Mom, was played by June Lockhart. The stage three Master was a Forest Ranger called Corey Stewart- I think there were several actors involved. It was a mistake regearing for an adult handler- as the program was essentially juvenile and could have gone on in the juvenile setting with different actors. No double Barking! woof woof.
To date there have been ten Lassies with ten different birthdays. The first Lassie, from the 1943 Movie, "Lassie, Come Home," (played by "Pal") was born June 4, 1940.

All nine Lassies have been male dogs. Although in the movies and on television, Lassie was cast as a female dog. All of the Lassies were descendants of Pal, the first Lassie, who died in 1958. Since then the Lassies have been (in order): Lassie Jr., Spook, Baby, Mire, Hey Hey, Boy, The Old Man and Howard, the current Lassie.

The breed was collie. The collie that played the role of Lassie in the first seven MGM films starring 'Lassie' was Pal. In due course, other Lassie films and a TV series was made, and most of the Lassies were descendents of the original Pal.Their names include Boy, Howard, Hey Hey IIand Rockie (Lassie 10).There were also one or two non-Pal 'Lassies', one of which was called Mason.Of course, in all the films and broadcasts, the credits always said that Lassie was played by 'Lassie'!For more information, see Related links below.

Lassie, the fictional character, made her first appearance in a short story called "Lassie Come-Home" published in 1938. However, the character was originally created by Eric Knight in 1938, so you can say that Lassie was "born" in that year.
