No he wasn't real. The story of Robin Hood began in the 1200's as an oral poem that people could tell over and over. This was a time before people could read or write and stories were told orally usually in rhyme because it was easy to remember. The story evolved throuh time and characters were added and different parts of the story took on different meanings depending on the time it was told. Since it is such a good adventure tale modern movie makers and story tellers have kept up retelling the story of Robin Hood.
A pardon has been found for Robin Hood by two researchers David Pilling and Rob Lynley. Robin was involved in the Peasants Revolt at York. His pardon reads, "Robert Hode (Hood), otherwise known as Robert Dore of Wadsley (West Riding of Yorkshire) given the King's pardon on 22nd May 1382."
