Painted in 1585, by Nicholas Hilliard and on show in Hatfield House, the portrait shows an ermine standing on her lower arm. The ermine is a symbol of royalty, and it wears a crown around its neck. The crown is a symbol of majesty and purity. The Queen can be seen to be wearing the Three Brothers, a jewel made of three diamonds in a triangle around a pointed diamond. It was said to be of her most loved jewels. Beside the Queen rests the Sword of State symbolising justice, and she holds an olive branch to symbolise peace.
