However, you cannot predict who will be given the part of The Doctor when Matt Smith leaves, until it has been confirmed by the BBC, or a member of the Doctor Who production team. The rumours surrounding who will be the next Doctor usually turn out to be false (as they did prior to both Ecclestons' and Tennants' appointments to the role.)

It all depends on the success of the show, and right now DW is at its height as far as ratings go in the United Kingdom. It's even becoming more popular here in America. The directors, writers, and producers do not plan that far ahead. However, it's been confirmed that Matt Smith will continue to be the Doctor for Series 7. There's also a rumor that says that he will stick around until the 50th "Golden" Anniversary of DW.
