Evolution is when a mutation gives a creature a survival advantage and that creatures survives to breed. Therefore evolution is useful because it results in a creature better suited to survive long enough to breed.
Evolution is useful as a belief. In this, it underpins Humanism, Atheism and naturalism. That this is so, is quite evident in the way it is defended emotionally and aggressively by its proponents. Richard Dawkins stated:
