Temperature and the freezing point of substances is a direct relation to the movement of molecule's. When water freezes the molecules slow their movement and become compressed. The reason this is strange is that water has such a high freezing point: 32 (31.7) degrees F or 0 degrees C. This is much higher then other liquids such as Alcohol (ethyl) which is -174 F or -115 C.

Water also expands on freezing - this is rare - and it is one of the few solids that are less dense than their liquids
