Plants take in water from the soil for numerous reasons. At a basic level water is needed in order for the plant to go for photosynthesis: water + C02 (+light) = O2 + glucose. Transpiration is the process whereby water vapor is evaporated into the atmosphere from the aerial parts of the plant (leaves and stem). By constantly losing water the plant can easily take more in by osmosis, (water moving from an area of high concentration to a low concentration). Basically it is a chain. When water leaves the plant water will move in from the stem as there is more water there. This will make water constantly move up the stem to where the leaves are which in turn will cause the roots to keep drawing in water from the soil again due to osmosis. This flow of water will keep bringing in mineral ions which are dissolved in the water, which the plant needs in order to live healthy. As water is always moving up the stem it keeps the plant upright or turgid allowing it compete for the sunlight. Transpiration uses 98% of all water and photosynthesis uses only 2%.

What is one way water can cycle through a plant?

One way water can cycle through a plant is through transpiration, which is where moisture is absorbed from the soil by the plant's roots and carried to small pores on the underside of the leaves. As it collects on the underside of the leaves, it evaporates and is released into the atmosphere.
