In the book, "guns, germs and steel" Jared Diamond answers this. In part winter in northwestern Europe forced people to mass produce and store food for the winter. Some crops such as wheat, are easier to mass produce. Europe has beast of burden. Horses oxen, can pull plows and wagons and war chariots. Zebras and other beast of Africa or the new world are not well suited to pull plows. Its a little like trying to make a "cat pulled sled" dogs pull sleds and dogs and horses "work" cats, and zebras do not. Elephants acn do a lot of work, but are "very expensive" they eat alot and a " unhappy elephant" is a very big problem.
