What does a continental divide represent?

The "Continental Divide"separates the Atlantic and Pacific watersheds.The continental divide (on any continent) is the place where rain falling on one side would go to the ocean on one side (the Pacific Ocean in the case of North America) and rain on the other side would eventually make its way to the other side of the continent (the Atlantic Ocean). Canada has four continental divides. It has the Great Continental Divide that starts in Alaska and then goes through British Colombia and Alberta. It has the Arctic Divide that is north of Hudson Bay in Nunavut and Northwest Territories and connects to the Great Divide at Snow Dome. The third continental divide in Canada is the Laurentian which starts at Triple Divide Peak and winds through Canada, dips into Montana and Minnesota, then goes northward of Lake Superior through Ontario and Quebec to the Labrador Sea. The fourth is the St. Laurence which includes all of the Great Lakes.
