the prime meridian is like the equator. It is 0o and splits the earth into the eastern and Western Hemisphere. If you look at a globe it passes through some countries, for example, the United Kingdom, and is a line of longitude (north and south).

What is the half called that the equator divides?

Half of any sphere is a 'hemisphere'. In the case of the equator, the halves north and south of it are called the Earth's 'northern hemisphere' and 'southern hemisphere'.

What is the importance of the equator the prime meredian?

If you want to measure something and pass the measurements to somebody else, both of you have to agree on the units, and you also have to agree on where 'zero' is. For the system of measurement that is most widely used to describe the location of places on the earth ... latitude and longitude ... the measurements are in angles, and the equator and Prime Meridian are the zeros.

What is the prime meredian?

How many hours difference are there between the prime meredian and the international date line?

We're not sure exactly how the time zones are drawn, but we don't really need that. Since the distance is nominally 1/2-way around the world, the time difference should be nominally 12 hours.

Which 2 hemispheres does the US lie in?

North & West Western Hemisphere, because it is west of the Prime meredian and Northern Hemisphere because it is located above the Equator. Strange as it may seem, there is also a tiny part of the USA in the Eastern Hemisphere. It's the western portion of the Aleutian chain of islands that dangles from the "chin" of Alaska, and keeps going, across the meridian of 180 longitude into the eastern hemisphere. It's all part of the state of Alaska, and part of the US.
