If you were being paid in cash, it's possible your employer was not paying workman's comp insurance, disability, or unemployment, etc. on you. If your employer was not holding out any taxes on you, and if you didn't report those earnings, you need to check on that before applying for benefits. Otherwise, you can be charged with tax evasion, depending on how long you were being paid in cash, and if you paid taxes on it or not.
I'm almost 100% Positive that they cannot. If you were hurt on the job, weren't drunk or high or doing something stupid. call the labor board.

Worker's Comp MAY cover an injury from a motor vehicle accident IF the accident is arising from, and in the course and scope of your employment. It will NOT cover an injury sustained while merely commuting to work. However, someone such as a delivery driver that is hurt while delivering, IS covered.
if your employer doesn't have workers comp insurance then you sue the company directly. Find a good lawyer.
Workers comp insurance has nothing to do with family members. Workers comp insurance is an insurance policy that your employer will have on if in case you get hurt at work.
