ZIP Codes are postal routing numbers in the United States or in the Philippines. Many other countries have postal codes, but they do not call them ZIP Codes. In the US, a ZIP Code is 5 digits, with a 4-digit extension. The first three digits identify a broad area. The next two digits identify either a town or a portion of a city. The 4-digit extension narrows the location down to a single P.O. Box, a single business address, or typically one side of one block of a street in a residential area.

Area codes are telephone routing numbers. In the US, area codes are three digits, with the first digit 2 through 9, the middle digit 0 through 8, and the last digit different from the middle digit (except for special non-geographic codes). In many places, the same state or part of a state may have more than one area code in what is called an overlay. For example, Fort Worth, Texas, uses area codes 817 and 682. In an overlay, you must always dial the area code for all calls, including local calls to numbers in the same area code.
