As far as we know, electricity was first discovered over 2000 years ago in ancient Greece. It wasn't called electricity back then, but the Greeks knew that if you rub a piece of amber with a piece of fur, the two become attracted to each other. This static electricity demonstration is still used in high school classrooms.


The actual word "electricity" was created in 1600, by the English physician William Gilbert.


Benjamin Franklin is famous for (supposedly) flying a kite with metal attached to it in a thunderstorm. According to that story, when lightning hit the kite, it traveled down the string and zapped him. He was hoping to prove that lightning and electricity were related. This story is generally believed to be a bit of a lie, since if he'd actually been holding the kite string he would have been electrocuted. Being struck by lightning is generally fatal.
