A survey of two papers in Chicago seems to say that the price of a "room" in 1909 was between $2 and change and $3 and change a month to rent. Now, this was considered a poorer neighborhood rent. 99% of the homes had a "toilet" and 20 something% had a "bathroom." Just to give an idea of the condition of these. This was the time for a massive migration from Europe after the Irish migration had finished?? Wages from what I read from one source were between .20 and 30 cents (+ or - 5) an hour and came to approx $60 a month (so it points to 10 hour work days 7 days a week)? My guess is $60 was computed by someone with worse math than mine. I would put this at .25*50*4 = $50 a month So, this is for low skilled manufacturing labor. $60 a month?? What would that be for an under the table illegal working in a boiler shop today?? maybe $700 a month. so: 60/700 *$2.00 = .17cents for a loaf?? as good a guess as I have. Figure enough error in my computations and 14 cents to 20 cents makes sense.
