There are a number of reasons why the electoral college has not be abolished. The electoral college is quick and easy to understand for example.
In 1784, the Spanish closed New Orleans to American goods coming down the Mississippi River. In 1795, the border was settled and the U.S. and Spain had a trade agreement. New Orleans was reopened and Americans could transfer goods without paying cargo fees (right of deposit) when transferring goods from one ship to another.

Congress lacked the money it needed to pay off the government's war debt because of an unbalanced budget. Congress can continue to pay for or extend a war without actually having the money to directly fund it.

Both the Virginia and New Jersey Plans included a legislative branch, but differed in the way the legislative branch was defined. The Virginia Plan proposed a legislative branch consisting of two chambers, while the New Jersey Plan proposed a unicameral legislature.
