The event was the TET, or Chinese New Year, that began on January 30th, 1968. The North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong forces launched attacks in every province of South Vietnam. When news reports of this major offensive reached the United States, the President, Congress, the public, and military leaders felt that a quick stop to the conflict was not possible.
