The Constitution provided no guidance on secession or readmission of states.

By the draft, mainly, and new immigrants from Germany and Ireland were paid to enlist.

Distracting the attention of the garrison commander by ordering a cavalry raid right down through the state of Mississippi, while Grant managed to get his men across to the East bank of the river, unnoticed.

The people in steerage were at the bottom of the ship and below water level. There were no windows, no rooms, and very little of anything else. The ships in the 1900's divided decks according to classes of people. The decks were separated with locked gates and the upper deck people who paid the most for passage never met or saw the people on the other decks. The immigrants below were locked in so they couldn't have access to the upper decks. They were considered the poorest dirtiest people on the ship so we're sold the worse accommodations.

Before the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863, slaves in the South could only hope that advancing Union armies would not make themselves victims of collateral damage. After January 1, 1863, Southern slaves could look forward to being freed by advancing Union armies.The Proclamation had no effect on Union slave holding states.

With that said, many freed slaves wanted to enlist in the Union army.
