The event known as the Berlin Airlift was the Allies' response
to Stalin's act of closing the roads through East Germany and to
the Allies' occupation zones in West Berlin. In order to supply
that half of the city, British planes, along with some American,
flew into the city to airlift supplies. It was the only safe way to
do it, because Stalin wouldn't shoot down an army plane for fear of
World War III.
