UnFreedom Day is an unofficial annual event coinciding with Freedom Day on 27 April. Started in 2005 by Abahlali baseMjondolo in Durban, the aim of the day is to demonstrate how the poor are still not free in South Africa as well as to celebrate the growing strength of the movement’s struggle. Freedom Day was first held on 27th April 1995 to commemorate the first democratic, non-racial, post-apartheid election. The elections took place on the same date in 1994 after over 300 years of colonialism, apartheid, and white minority rule.
