Can you receive a hymenectomy while on your period?

I got this from another website... This is usually not a problem and rarely is a surgery cancelled because of a menstruating patient.

Head to your scheduled appointment for check-in at the hospital wearing a pad. Usually the nurse will provide guidance. Sometimes mesh panties are provided that will be removed once you are in the OR.

Sometimes they will have you prepare for surgery as normal, removing your clothes and putting on the hospital gown and placing a pad under you when you get onto the gurney (hospital bed).

When you wake up, you will have another pad under you, be provided disposable panties and you will be probably bleed/spot for a week or so post-op from the surgery.

Menstruating during your surgery? Most surgeons do not consider this a problem.

If in doubt, call the doctor's office. The surgeon's office nurse will put your mind at ease.

yes, you can have a hysterectomy while you are on your period. Just let the preop nurse know and she will place a pad under you during your prep. It is also a good idea to wear a pad the morning of your surgery.

Yes. Menstrual bleeding occurs when thickened endometrial tissue (which lines the uterus) breaks up and reverts to being thin, so it's natural to assume that a hysterectomy will completely end periods.

However, as long as there's a functioning ovary there will be a monthly cycle, and if there is any remaining endometrial tissue it will respond normally to hormones. Some hysterectomies are partial and so a portion of the uterus remains. Even when the uterus is fully removed, some endometrial tissue may remain attached to the uterus's side of the cervix, which can cause mini-periods.

It's a good idea for a woman to talk to her gynaecologist about this in case other issues are contributing to the bleeding (such as a cyst, for example), especially if the hysterectomy was for period-related problems (such as endometriosis, for example).
