Monotheistic People confuse the many Gods and deities in Hinduism with polytheism. But Hinduism is primarily monotheistic. The many Gods are considered different expressions or manifestations of the one supreme Paramatma (Ultimate spirit), which by itself is formless.

I've read that Americans are among the most religious people in the world. Usually religious people believe in God(s)--if you believe in one God, you are monotheistic (example Judaism). If you believe in many gods, you are polytheistic (example neo-Pagans). Simply because America is a multi-coultured nation where people from different nations are found and that's why we find most Americans polytheistic or monotheistic because they bond with the people around them.

The second biggest monotheistic religion after that is Islam, with 20% of the world's population a Muslim. It is debated by many whether Christianity is actually monotheistic, (because of the Trinity) but all Christian agree that there is one God, just in 3 parts.
