MORQUIO'S SYNDROME IS A RECESSIVE DISORDER, REQUIRING FAMILIAL CONSANGUINITY TO OCCUR. THAT IS, THERE HAVE TO BE MEMBERS OF BOTH PARENTS' FAMILIES WHO HAVE HAD THE DISEASE FOR IT TO OCCUR.

ALTHOUGH THE DISEASE IS EXTREMELY RARE, WITH A VERY HIGH INFANT MORTALITY RATE, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE WITH MORQUIO'S, BOTH TYPE A AND TYPE B, TO SURVIVE TO RELATIVELY OLD AGE. ALTHOUGH NOT CURABLE (AT THIS TIME, IT IS TREATABLE, USUALLY WITH SURGERY, MEDICATION (PRESCRIPTION AND HERBAL FOR PAIN). MOST MORQUIO'S HAVE ABOVE-AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE AND SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO USE THEIR BRAINS, FINDING ACTIVITIES WHICH WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR SUPERIOR INTELLIGENCE.

I HAVE MORQUIO'S TYPE B AND AM 63; I HAVE BEEN AN INDEPENDENT SCHOLAR MOST OF MY LIFE. MY IMMEDIATELY YOUNGER BROTHER IS 62 AND HAS TYPE A. HE HAS BEEN A PROFESSOR IN SEVERAL DEPARTMENTS OF ANTHROPOLOGY AND RELIGION IN BRAZIL AND IN THE US ALL HIS LIFE, AND IS EXTENSIVELY PUBLISHED AS A WORLD AUTHORITY ON SOUTH AMERICAN NATIVE RELIGIONS AND SHAMANISM.

IN SPITE OF SEVERE BONE AND JOINT MALFUNCTIONS -- I HAVE SEVERE SPINAL STENOSIS, OSTEOPOROSIS, SEVERE DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE; A BROKEN BACK AND COLLAPSED NECK; FIPROMYALGIA AND SIGNIFICANT RETENTION OF UN-METABOLIZED KERATO-SULFATES IN THE FORM OF CYSTS; AND HAVE HAD OVER 30 MAJOR SURGERIES, MOSTLY ORTHOPEDIC AND NEUROLOGIC -- I AM STILL PHYSICALLY FUNCTIONING, WALKING SOME, AND AM ENGAGED IN SEVERAL IMPORTANT ACADEMIC AND SCHOLARLY PROJECTS.
