This often occurs in the elderly, and osteoporosis is the culprit. following the acute event (usually from a fall in a person with osteoporosis [softening of the spine AND hip bones from a lost of calcium the bones] there is usually onset of severe Back pain for several weeks as well as constipation from a reaction of the bowels from the pain. After several weeks the pain slowly begins to go away and the bowels begin to function normally. Men as well as women (women more than men) suffer from osteoporosis due to the loss of bone mass (bone structure); taking 1200 - 1400 mg of calcium a day WITH VITAMIN D, 400 - 600 International Units (Established by the National Academy of Sciences) gradually builds up the strength of the bone (spine and hips)... They haven't figured out how much Vitamin D is too much, but the minimum (above) helps with calcium uptake into the bones. It has recently been found to help in cardiac health as well...
Compression fractures can be caused by osteoporosis, trauma inflicted on the back, and tumors that have started in the bone. Tumors that occur in the spine also cause compression fractures.
its the fracture of the lumbar spine at the level of the lower back above the sacral spine its caused by sitting or falling down on your back people with osteoporosis have fractures of the lower back easier due to their bones being brittle.
A "broken back" typically refers to fractures in the vertebrae of the spine, which can occur in various regions: cervical (neck), thoracic (upper back), or lumbar (lower back). Common types of fractures include compression fractures, where the vertebra collapses; burst fractures, where the vertebra breaks into multiple pieces; and transverse process fractures, affecting the bony projections on the sides of the vertebrae. These injuries can lead to significant pain, instability, and potential nerve damage, depending on their severity and location.

Leg raises can hurt your back because they put strain on the lower back muscles and can cause compression on the spine, especially if proper form is not maintained. This can lead to discomfort or pain in the lower back area.
It affects the lower back and sometimes the spinal cord.

X rays are ordered for patients whose symptoms suggest cancer, infection, inflammation, pelvic or abdominal disease, or bone fractures.
It is not important to wait for the chest to come back to its original position after each compression
If you have loss of compression then a full rebuild of the engine is most likely needed.
