The reason you get a cold is because your immunesystem is low and therefore you are more receptive to different types of bacteria. So basically anything that brings down your immunesystem can give you a cold. But commonly getting wet and cold (in the rain or after swimming) is one. Also high stress levels makes your body more tired so therefore you're more likely to get sick. There are many reasons. But if you take care of yourself and take it easy you can usally avoid it ^^

Viruses cause the common cold, usually the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronavirus (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. The idea that cold weather causes colds is a long held traditional concept from back before it was known that viruses existed or that they were the cause of the common cold. See the related question below for more information about why the cold and flu have a season that is during the cold weather in most places.

Rhinovirus is not a bacteria. It is a virus. The name means 'nose virus' and often causes what we call the common cold.
The rhinovirus got its name from the Greek word Rhin, or nose. This is one the of the most common causes of the "common cold".
The common cold. Because the cold is the disease and the causes are viruses, not the other way around. Colds are caused by viruses, like the rhinovirus. These viruses are the cause of the disease called the common cold in lay terms. This infectious disease is known by different names in medical terminology. One of the most often used alternate names for the common cold is acute viral nasopharyngitis. Other medical names of the common cold are rhinopharygitis and acute coryza. These are the different names of the disease (common cold) that is caused by the sub-microscopic pathogens known as viruses.Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold.
