The risk factors for breast cancer include genetics, hormones such as estrogen and estradiol, and injuries to the soft tissue caused in a variety of ways.
Other factors that increase breast cancer risk include tobacco and alcohol use, hereditary factors, not having children or late first childbirth, early menstruation, late menopause, radiation and physical injury (including having surgery, a mammogram or biopsy), poor diet, and consumption of milk products.
Bras as a related factor
There are a number of factors that affect your risk of getting Breast cancer. Probably the most important is whether you wear a bra, how well your bra fits and how many hours per day you wear it. Singer and Grismaijer surveyed bra wearing behavior of 4730 women, 2056 of whom had breast cancer and found that:
* Women who wore Bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer
* Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.
* Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 152 risk.
* Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer.
*The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference.

The above information about bras is from a research team, Singer and Grosmaijer, who are not doctors. They refer to themselves as "cultural anthropologists." (see related link below)
