Insulin is used to convert the sugar or carbohydrates that we consume into energy. Just like a lamp needs to be plugged in to turn on, our bodies need energy to move or breathe or even think. If we do not have insulin to convert the carbs into energy our bodies will start to extract the energy it needs from the extra fat it stores. This is what ketones are feeding on it own organs and muscles to get the energy that it needs. This causes ketones to accumulate in your bloodstream. ketones cause acidity in your body , which will upset the body's chemical balance. This can lead to the development of a life-threatening condition called ketoacidosis. If you still cannot create energy for you body it will start feeding off of its own organs and muscles. Eventually this process will lead to death. I know that is a harsh explanation and not a medical or perfect one at that but its the best I can understand it and I have been studying it for 6 years..... .

Blood sugar levels rise when body breaks down food into glucose to produce energy that allows us to live our days. However, with type two diabetes since it is either not producing enough insulin or the cells are not taking up the insulin it creates a giant build up of glucose within the body and that can lead to problems with your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.

How is it that the insulin stops working and or doesn't produce enough?

This question consists of two separate sections. The insulin made in a person's body may become less effective if a phenomenon known as insulin resistance develops. Genetic and environmental factors interact to make insulin less effective at the level of the cell membrane, so that excess fats and sugars in the blood are not used appropriately. The body's first response to insulin resistance is to produce more insulin in specialized areas of the pancreas known as beta cells. Over time, beta cells become less able to produce insulin, and blood sugars may continue to rise.
