You name it , they do it, including bathing, washing, drinking the water, pissing and defecating in it, and sometimes throwing dead bodies that are not properly cremated. It is gross, but it happens.
Many different types of fish do this; often juveniles. Notably this is done by Cleaner Wrasse.
In modern times, those who die from bubonic plague (the nominal cause of the Black Death) have their bodies treated as a biological hazard (which, frankly, they are), and afforded special treatment. In more developed countries, the usual recommendation for burial is to be cremated, though use of a sealed metal casket is also possible for those who don't believe in cremation. In less developed countries, cremation is generally the method used to dispose of the dead person's body, with it being done very promptly to prevent any infection from spreading. Historically, part of the reason that the Black Death was so bad was that proper disposal of dead bodies was poorly done. Often, the dead were left out in the street for "burial crews" to come and pick up; these crews had a high rate of infection themselves, and insufficient numbers in these crews meant that is was common for bodies to be left for several days by the roadside. Additionally, most bodies were simply buried in the ground, without even a coffin, let alone a metal-lined one (and cremation was spotty).

Not much. They know most things about it now.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) performs baptisms for the dead. However, these baptisms are done by proxy - meaning a living person stands in for the deceased and is baptized in their behalf. There are no dead bodies involved, and therefore no febreeze or air fresheners of any kind.
Theban King Creon is sent by his brother-in-law and nephew, Theban King Oedipus, to find out what can be done to solve the plague problem. He's sent to consult with the Oracle at Apollo's Shrine. The Oracle says that the plague only will end with the identification and punishment of the killer or killers of Theban King Laius.
Hundreds.... they are still counting the death toll from the March 11th tragedy. There will probably be thousands of dead and missing in Miyagi Prefecture when it is all said and done. Many people will likely never be found, dead or alive.
