Asthma is a very common condition. In developed countries between three and six percent of the total population have asthma. Asthma occurs more frequently in children with approximately one in five children suffering from the condition in some countries. In children, it is more common in boys than girls; in adults, it is more common in women than in men. The rate of occurance of asthma varies dramatically in different countries and regions.ISAAC, The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood, is the largest worldwide collaborative research project ever undertaken. Focussing strictly on children, the study has categorized the prevalence of asthma throughout much of the world since 1991. What we have found from the study is: (a) The rate of asthma is higher (up to 20% of the youth population) in affluent countries such as the USA, UK and Ireland, Australia and New Zealand; the rate is dramatically lower (as low as 2%) in less-developed countries such as Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Greece and Eastern European nations. (b) The rate of asthma is dramatically higher in urban regions than in rural regions, and dramatically higher among the urban poor. (c) The rate of asthma worldwide is increasing over time. Health organizations have found increased rates of 200% to 400% over 20-30 years. The most dramatic increases have been found in regions moving from more-primitive to more-"westernized" living conditions. (d) The data has not provided any distinct indication of a cause or causes for asthma.
