An Achilles heel is a weakness that leads to your downfall. It comes from Greek mythology where the hero, Achilles, was dipped in the river Styx to protect him from harm. Unfortunately his heels didn't touch the water and he was eventually killed in battle, in the Battle of Troy, by Paris. The Achilles tendon is located on the back of the heel connecting the calf to the foot.
If you have a pain in your heel it may be bruised. This could be could caused by not having enough padding in your shoes. When I had a bruised heel everyday I soaked my foot in a bowl of Epsom salts. Then iced it down. Once in a while I would walk on it for a while. It only took a week or two to heel completely heel.
Heels can get sore just from using them too much; however, sometimes it goes beyond muscle fatigue. The underside of the foot can be bruised by stepping on small, sharp items. Too much stress on the foot can cause plantar fasciitis, which is an inflamed foot muscle. If left untreated, this could eventually lead to a heel spur, which is a bony protrusion from the heel. I have a sore on my foot.
I dug a ridge along the hair line in my hubby's heel using the sharp end of a knife with a gentle plucking motion in the dead skin on the surface. I then finished opening the ridge with nail file on a pair of toenail clippers. Once the ridge was open, i used a pair of tweezers to finish digging out the hair, and finally removed it. If the heel is too sore to do all of the above, you can numb the heel by applying ice before procedure and during procedure.

The term "arch" is mostly used to define the area in between a person's heel and toe on his or her foot. The arch is very important when it comes to selecting shoes that will fit comfortably. People with arches should buy shoes that support their arch, otherwise their feet will get sore, because all of their weight is being channeled to their toes and heel, which creates a huge amount of pressure on these parts of the foot. When the arch is supported, it distributes the person's weight equally along the foot, reducing the pressure on any one part.
Applying ice is generally better for reducing inflammation and pain in a sore heel. Heat may feel good temporarily, but it can potentially worsen the inflammation. It's recommended to ice the heel for about 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
