Warming up before an exercise does two things. First it gets the muscles warmer. Which sounds obvious but what does does is helps prevent tendon strains. Especially when it is a cold or chilly day. Muscles will contract ever so slightly to help produce heat in the body and to keep our body temperature stable. Because of this the muscles are contracted and if you go right into an exercise the tendons are stretched even further which can causes strains.
The second reason is warm muscles produce more force speed and strength. Enzymes which are inside muscle cells and are the catalyst for reactions in the muscle cells work better in a warm environment.
Your muscles will need to be eased into the work. If one jumps straight into strenuous excersise without warming up, then they are at a much higher risk of injury. Plus when you warm up, it gets your body ready for the excersise and may give you more stamina.
