In 1921 in West Virginia there was an armed conflict between coal miners, who were trying to legalized unionization, and the corrupt police and security officials hired by the coal mining companies to stop the miners. As a sign of solidarity, the coal miners all wore red kerchiefs around their necks and the moniker was born.
