Although SSRIs are sometimes used to help manage pain (especially in fibromyalgia syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome), most pain medications are not SSRIs.  SSRIs are most commonly used to treat depressive mood disorders.

Examples of pain medications other than SSRIs include:

  1. NSAIDS such as aspirin, ibuprofen, aleve, naproxin, or Celebrix
  2. Tylenol (acetaminophen)
  3. DMARDs for rheumatoid arthritis
  4. Opioid narcotic agents like hydrocodone, demerol, morphine, or oxycontin
  5. Mixed narcotic agents like Nubain
  6. Anticonvulsants such as Neurontin, Lyrica, or Topamax
