Ferdinand Magellan was searching for a westward route to Moluccas (now Melaka). In 1521, he explored the Philippines, and was killed in a the Battle of Mactan.

He did not circumnavigate the globe in one voyage. During different voyages he did manage to become the first European to cross all lines of longitude. He discovered the Straits of Magellan and became the first European to enter the Pacific from there.
