Merchants traded throughout the Early Middle Ages, as we can see from Archaeology. In the 5th and 6th centuries, trade was very much reduced by the upheavals in society brought about by peoples invading Western Europe. Once this subsided, however, trade gradually increased. In fact, the Vikings, who we remember as raiders, were also traders, and are remembered primarily for this in some parts of Europe. By the end of the Early Middle Ages, there was much more trade, though it was not as great an economic force as it soon became.

The early middle ages, which is the period from the end of antiquity (which can be marked by a number of differnt events, but in general the late 5th century) up until about the year 1000 saw a period of decreased urbanization, trade, and money economy in general. The is a generalization, there were some spike of development during the early middle ages, such as the reign of Charlemagne, but overall This period was not marked by strong long distance trade.

Starting approximately in the year 1000, in the period usually known as the high middle ages, this trend reversed, and there was the beginning of an increase in ubran populations, trade, and a money economy. Even with the tremendous disruptions of the 14th century this process continued, and the increase in trade set the stage for European expansion during the age of exploration.
