You may have heard a comment based on a stereotype modern northern Italians hold regarding the people in modern Rome and southern Italians in general. Northerners regard themselves as hard working and Southerners lazy.

Who are considered to be ancient ancestors of Romans?

From my understanding their was so much intermixing over the years it is hard to tell. Ethnic Romans were descendants of Indo-European Italic peoples and non-Indo-European Mediterranean peoples (myths say they are descended from Trojan refugees from Greece). They began in Italy in an area called Latium. Eventually they expanded their empire to what is now France, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Germany, and parts of Eastern Europe and the Near East. When they invaded a nation (i.e. the Celtic Gauls in France) they would intermix with them. Gauls and Romans produced Gallo-Romans. Celtiberians in Spain and Romans produced Hispano-Romans. Later, Germanic tribes took over the Western part of Rome and intermixed with the Gallo-Romans, Hispano-Romans, Roman-Romans, etc. producing the French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc. peoples. All in all, many European peoples have Roman blood but their exists no pure Roman people in Modern Europe. Romance speaking people probably have more Roman ancestry than a Russian or German for example, but still possess German, Celtic, and even Middle Eastern blood.

What does Spain owe to the Romans?

The roots of the Spanish language is Latin and the culture of the Spaniards Latin. This is the biggest legacy from the Roman days, one which they share with the Portuguese, Italians and French, who have also inherited these features from the Roman days. The Romans were Latins.

Are today's Italians direct descendants of the Romans?

Yes, today's Italians are indeed direct descendents of the Romans. The south of Italy (including Sicily), which reatins a lot of the darker features from Semitic and Greek influences, is much closer in appearance to how the ancient Romans may have looked like, as Rome was largely a melting pot of Latin, Greek and North African mixes. Proof of this can be found in remaining Southern Italian features, such as the Roman nose and smaller height. The north of Italy has more Germanic influence and is therefore less Roman in appearance.
