A successful communist country would probably be China but I guess it depends on how you define 'successful'.
Other current communist states are North Korea, Laos, Vietnam and Cuba I believe.
Both of these answers are incorrect. There have been no successful communist countries (meaning they are *true* communists from day one to the present) in history. Every country that has ever made an attempt at communism as a central government has failed. Nearly every one has been turned into a totalitarian state, the opposite of communism.

This view is Traditionalist and in no way institutes a fair realization of a number of elements that contribute a full answer. I shall rectify that presently after all history and fact are all a matter of whose opinion you listen to.
Firstly when considering communist countries in relation to success you must consider the realities, the first is that communism in practice on a national level has only existed for 100 years, arguably starting in Russia in the 1917 Bolshevik revolution a revolution for the people. Since then there have been a number of countries which have become communist through popular and unpopular uprisings alike, for all that they did the sentiment was a good one 'equality for all', 'suffering for none', now vile people will spout that such a goal is impossible for humanity is a greedy selfish beast for which capitalism is the only choice, really the question was being asked what would you as a person prefer communism which states an end to all atrocities, or capitalism which uses smoke, deception, scare tactics and mirrors to practice such vile Conducts that benefit the select few 1% of the world population.
With this point stated, there will be a return to the original question "has there been a successful communist country, or which is the most successful" is first answer is right in its conclusion that in order to judge success it must be by extent since world revolution is the only way to achieve total equality. Anyhow China can be used as an example that central government can produce prosperity, and for any skeptics China communist is far less corrupt then the 'democracy' that came before it, as well as this it has been successful at proving people can work well together a fact very little consider on scale. As for Cuba a country pasted as a political fear every since the Cuba missile crisis, despite having a trade embargo and a fairly poor economy it has the fairest medical system in the world, as well as all levels of education free to it's people with all expenses covered by the state something no other countries have. they also have the best ratio of doctors to residents with 1 doctor to 170 people with exceptionally low healthcare costs none suffer living lives that on average are a year behind the US. so Cuba has been successful in making education equal, and is the closest to medical equality. China is in simple terms hard to explain as a success for failure because of the mixture of capitalism into the system, a necessary evil some say, the USSR was the same.
What is seemingly forgotten is the successes of the Soviet Union with its darker implications overshadowing them. They did have the cheapest travel rates, they were the reason why many western countries became more liberal in their changes out of fear of Communism, after all the British NHS came in 1921 two years after the first world war a system that was needed to restore Britain to a country capable of producing a healthy strong force. the only reason the USA lacks such a institution is that they can afford to. People forget that after World War 1 US soldiers came home to find no houses, starvation, they even protested outside Washington only to be slaughtered by their government a 'democracy' of the people with only two political choices yes that sounds far more democratic then a one party system.
Apologise this is about communism, so let us consider Vietnam a country that fought hard to remain communist. In this country social and economic problems were solved under communist control, for the most part unless you've specialised in any communist country history you will not be able to find a great deal that can make you conclude that communism is successful but that's not to say that communism has not been successful. I mean communism has had 100 years to develop in the most turbulent, destructive and bloodiest century in history it's enemy capitalism has existed for thousands of years so as far anyone should be concerned Capitalism can't succeed if its been so long while communism in such little time has made such grand leaps. In my opinion which is the best you might find the most successful communist country was the USSR because it was the first, did cause a ripple effect on the world, improved many aspects of life certainly it was the first country to have a policy of free love for a while, and ended before it could become a capitalist country in a communist shell. China is probably second because it is exceptionally well known now and is the majority for any one type of person in the world-with all talk to communism being discussed with them first nowadays. My third choice is Cuba since it was successful it stopping a lot of its own suffering, has the best doctors and offers free education at all level to residents. The other countries may be higher or lower but I honestly haven't studied any of there histories. But one things has always been true with communism, it has always been far more positive for its peoples' lives than the systems that came before it.
