It seems from 1941 onward (until 1975) there was always a war in Vietnam. During WWII French Vietnam was occupied by Japan until their surrender in 1945 (end of WWII). France almost went to war immediately upon their return to Vietnam in 1945, with the war really picking up pace in 1946 (the actual starting date according to historians), and ending in 1954. President Eisenhower sends over US advisers in 1955, and it escalates from there.
