Some of the colonies that were partially populated before 1664 include Virginia, Massachusetts, Maryland, and New York. These colonies were established in the early 17th century by European settlers, primarily the English and Dutch. The populations in these colonies grew steadily through natural increase and Immigration, leading to the development of distinct colonial societies with their own political, social, and economic structures.
The Dutch
New York began as a Dutch colony in 1624. The English took over following an Anglo-Dutch war, in 1664.
The English colonies of New York and New Jersey initially began as Dutch settlements; New York was originally known as New Amsterdam, a trading post established by the Dutch West India Company. In 1664, the English seized control of the territory, renaming it New York. New Jersey was initially part of New York but was separated and granted to two of the Duke of York's friends, becoming a separate colony in 1664. Both colonies were characterized by their diverse populations and economic opportunities.
