The leaders of the Western European nations were incensed over the aggressions of the Axis powers, particularly when Hitler had signed nonaggression treaties with them. The French and the British declared war on the Nazi Germans when they invaded Poland. The French and the British said they would help the Poles but they never did. The Poles felt betrayed by them.
They were resentful of the Western Europeans. The Russians came along and attacked in Poland instead. As the war progressed and more nations were invaded the more incensed and panicked the Britons became. Soon they were attacked in the Battle of Britain and The Battle of the Atlantic. Things went from bad to worse until the USA joined them in efforts to defeat the Germans. The Brits did do a good job of defeating the Germans in Africa though. Western powers were hesitant to intervene decisively against Soviet aggression due to a combination of factors, including the devastation of World War II, a desire to avoid another large-scale conflict, and the complexities of the emerging Cold War dynamics. Mussolini was famous for his tirades against Bolshevism. Despite his fascism and aggression in Africa, he even won the admiration of Winston Churchill. Mussolini's initial opposition to Hitler's early takeover ambitions on Austria was also well received. As late January 1939, Chamberlain traveled to Rome in an effort to convince Mussolini to not become an official ally of Hitler.
