Example: A US Navy Swift Boat (PCF-Patrol Craft Fast) was approximately 50' long, constructed of aluminum, had two engines, armed with three .50 caliber machineguns and one 81mm mortar (lanyard fired), and was manned by 1 officer and 5 crewmen. Swift Boats were part of the US Navy's Riverine Forces in Vietnam (which were part of the US Navy's Brown Water Navy in Vietnam). Under Vietnamization, the Swift Boat would go on patrol with one South Vietnamese sailor exchanged for one US sailor. Next patrol a 2nd South Viet sailor, in exchange for a 2nd US sailor. Third patrol, same. Fourth patrol same. Possibly by the fifth patrol the whole crew would consist of South Vietnamese sailors, except for the officer in charge of the boat, he'd remain USN. On the 6th patrol, a South Viet Naval Officer would take command...now the whole boat is manned by South Vietnamese officers and men. The above was a sample only; actual cases would vary. In some instances 2, 3, or more South Vietnamese sailors might man the boat at one time.
Vietnamization differs from the war policies of Nixon's predecessors in the sense that it reflected the Tet Defensive and the following ramifications.
What John Kerry thinks of the Vietnamization Policy is that he is completely for it. The Vietamization Policy is saying that he is againt the war in Iraq not necessarily the Vietnam War.
To honor and memorialize the lives of the nearly 60,000 Americans who died in the Vietnam War, and to those whose whereabouts are still unknown.
Certainly, it got the US out.
Vietnamization was part of President Nixon's plan for "Peace with Honor" by training, equipping, and then turning the full responsibility of defending South Vietnam to South Vietnam's military units.

Turning the war over to the South Vietnamese.

Vietnamization.
Nixon's plan for Vietnamization was to slowly replace the American troops fighting in Vietnam with Vietnam troops. Slowly bringing the Americans out of the war and helping the Vietnamese people have control over the conflict.

The significance of Vietnamization was that it allowed U.S. troops to withdraw without actually losing the Vietnam War by training the Southern Vietnamese to fight the Vietminh and Vietcong instead of the US troops.
More American troops were coming home.
It was pulling the troops out of Vietnam because the war was pointless and unpopular.
