Vietnam was a French colony up to l954. It was known as French Indo-China or also Cochin China. By the way Cochon means (Pig) in French. It is not commonly realized that the sea novel LORD JIM by Conrad takes place, in part, in Cochin China or what we now call Viet Nam.
