The main reason that Henry VIII broke from the Church of Rome was that he believed that he needed a son to make sure that the Tudor dynasty survived. In those days there could not be a queen so Mary could not rule. However, there were also other reasons which included that Henry needed money to become more powerful in Europe. The Church had lots of money. Henry wanted to control the Church to make himself more powerful and rich. As Henry's reign progressed it became more likely that he would break with Rome. This was partly because Catherine bore Henry six children - five died (two of which were boys) and one survived, Mary. Since Catherine had failed to produce a male heir Henry was getting worried. But added to this Henry thought that God had punished him for marrying his brother's wife and he thought that was the reason he got still born children. He then met Anne Boleyn who came up to him and told him she was pregnant with his child. Henry wanted to marry her before the child was born because he thought she will give birth to a boy.

How did Henry VIII make the break with Rome?

Henry decided to break away from Rome. On the advice of Thomas Crammer, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Henry announced himself divorced. He said the he would stop paying taxes to the Church. At the same time, some people did not like the fact that the Pope in Rome was head of the Catholic Church in England. They said that the Church was too rich and powerful. In 1534 Parliament passed a law called the Act of Supremacy. This said that Henry VIII was the supreme head on earth of the Church in England. At the time of the break with Rome, Thomas Cromwell was Henry's chief adviser. He was also in charge of stat affairs during the time of Henry's divorce from Catherine and his marriage to Anne Boleyn.

Why was Henry VIII scared of a northern rebellion?

Henry VIII was scared of a northern rebellion because his break with Rome was unpopular in the north of England. There was an economic recession between 1537-1541 and tax demands in 1540 were heavy and spent mostly in the south of England.
