He was so successful that to this day, he is often referred to as the "Father of Texas," and has been commemorated by having a number of places named after him. There had been one previous unsuccessful attempt in 1821 to establish a colony in what was originally Spanish Texas; later, when the land belonged to Mexico, Austin decided to make a second attempt. By late 1825, Austin brought 300 families to his settlement, which was named the Austin Colony. Gradually, he installed a system of laws, set up a law enforcement body that came to be known as the Texas Rangers, and put the Texas colony on a path to stability and growth... and ultimately, to independence by 1836.
