The government of Iraq is currently organized under a constitution ratified in 2005.

Legislative authority is vested in 2 bodies - the Council of Representatives and the Council of Union.

The Council of Representatives consists of 275 members, elected for four year terms. They pass all Federal Laws in Iraq, and elect the President of Iraq, who then selects a Prime Minister from the majority coalition of the Council.

The Council of Union has not yet been elected, and will be elected by regional elections. Its exact responsibilities are not laid out in the Iraqi Constitution, and will be determined by the Council of Representatives.
